From a young age I developed a passion for cooking. It all started with me preparing breakfast menus for my parents on sunday mornings. I was about 8 years old and woke up at 7 to make a menu which I then gave to my parents. I took their orders on my little note pad and got to work in the kitchen. Although my breakfast creations then mostly consisted of bread with jam or cheese and a boiled egg, I already enjoyed being in the kitchen.
Around the same age I became a vegetarian. It wasn’t as normal to be a vegetarian back then as it is now. I was often questioned by intrigued parents at the dinner table. Some of them were very understanding and some of them were not. I remember one time the parents of a girl in my class just put a meatball on my plate after I told them I was a vegetarian.
I value good quality food and I think this type of food should not just be reserved for special occasions like christmas or birthdays. Honey, my life is a special occasion, I better enjoy it. This is something my parents thought me and I practice every day of my life. Food should be delicious and enjoyed in good company. Eating together at the dinner table was therefore a must at my house. It was also my favorite moment of the day.
I come from a big family and I always really appreciated that my parents prepared a home-cooked meal despite of their busy days. Then it seemed like the most normal thing in the world, but as I got older and realised how much effort my parents put into it. I often cooked together with my dad, I still do and I still really enjoy it. It is a great time to catch up and tell each other about the crazy parts of our days.
Whenever I got home from secondary school or on a sunday morning I watched 24Kitchen. This is my favorite cooking channel on TV. I used to watch a show “De Makkelijke Maaltijd” (The easy meal) and Rudolphs Bakery. It inspired me and I was always eager to try out new recipes.
When I started University I moved out to a studio that had this amazing kitchen. It was tiny, but it was mine. This is where my love for cooking really flowered and I dedicated free time in my weekends to trying out new recipes with new or interesting products I found in the supermarket. Despite the long days I always managed to prepare a fresh meal for myself.
Lentil & Lime is one of my creative outlets where I try to share my cooking philosophy and awesome recipes. Something I always dreamed of 💕.
