Burger King is my favorite fast food place, and in a moment, I'll tell you why. First, I'd like to point out that, in addition to vegan options, they have an astonishing vegetarian menu. You can literally order a meatless version of any regular burger. However, there's one downside for vegetarians and vegans: the meatless patties, designed to mimic beef, are prepared in the same way as regular beef burgers to achieve their authentic flame-grilled taste. This means there's a risk of cross-contamination with beef. If this doesn't bother you as a vegetarian or a less strict vegan, you can enjoy a wide variety of meatless burgers. If it does, don’t worry; there are fully vegan options too. The vegan choices at Burger King include the Veggie Long Chicken and the Veggie Nuggets. Although marked as vegetarian, they are made with only plant-based ingredients.
The Veggie Long Chicken is a simple sandwich featuring a plant-based chicken patty from The Vegetarian Butcher, a brand known for its meat substitutes. The patty is fried separately from regular chicken products, reducing the risk of cross-contamination. It also includes plant-based mayonnaise, lettuce, and a sesame bun. This is my personal favorite.
If you’re not in the mood for a full burger or just want something extra, try the Veggie Nuggets! Also made by The Vegetarian Butcher, they presumably taste similar to the patty in the Veggie Long Chicken. I haven't tried them myself, as I tend to stick to my usual order, but I plan to give them a go someday. If I do, I'll pair them with sweet and sour or barbecue sauce.
Then, of course, there are the delicious vegan potato options: Twister Fries and regular fries. I often wonder how Burger King still sells regular fries when Twister Fries are so amazing. But I must admit, the regular fries are also delicious. Unpopular opinion: Burger King’s fries are much better than McDonald’s.
It's unfortunate that while mayonnaise is almost a national obsession in the Netherlands, Burger King doesn’t offer a vegan version for dipping your fries. However, they do provide a variety of vegan sauces: Barbecue, Curry, Sweet & Sour, and Ketchup.
All sodas and water options are vegan-friendly!
This is where it gets a bit disappointing. There are no plant-based desserts at Burger King, as all their desserts (like milkshakes and ice cream) contain milk, and the baked goods (like lava cakes) contain milk and eggs. A simple addition of at least one plant-based dessert option could be a big win for Burger King. A pre-packaged dessert that can be stored in the freezer or a cooler might be the easiest solution, as it wouldn’t require new equipment.
A Veggie Long Chicken menu with Twister Fries and a Fanta to wash it all down. So, if you ever find yourself wandering around, hungry, and looking for a vegan-friendly place to eat, check out the plant-based menu at Burger King or try my favorite order and let me know what you think!
